Google rebrands Hangouts Chat to Google Meet and premium features are free until September 30

Google has officially the rebranding of Hangouts Chat as Google Meet similarly named ‘Google Chat’ in its enterprise G Suite. Branding updates refer only to the enterprise version of Google’s products.

The Google Chat rebrand was spotted in G Suite support documents and was finally confirmed by online media – The Verge.

The consumers will continue to use Hangouts as a chat app in Gmail account and iOS or Android devices. Google launched Hangouts in 2013 to a replacement of Google Talk.

“There will be no changes to the consumer (classic) version of Hangouts,” The Verge quoted behalf of a Google spokesperson.

Google Meet has a daily growth rate of over 60 per cent and its daily usage has been more than 25 times than what it was in January, according to the company’s blog post.

Google revealed that more than 2 million new users connecting on Google Meet every day, and they’re spending over 2 billion minutes together which is averaging to more than 3,800 years of meetings in a single day.

Google had announced it has extended all of Google Meet’s premium features free of charge until September 30. The feature set includes the ability to host larger meetings with up to 250 participants per request, the ability to broadcast live to up to 100,000 viewers within a domain, and the ability to archive meetings that are then saved to Google Drive.
