Google Pay Introduces FASTag Recharge Via UPI

Google Pay on Monday announced that it has added a new Unified Payments Interface (UPI) feature that will help its user base in India to link FASTag accounts to the Google Pay app and recharge and track their payments. This feature will allow them to recharge and track their payments across the FASTag account using the Google Pay app.

To use this feature, just need to open Google Pay app, look for the FASTag category under Bill Payments section and select the bank that has issued FASTag. Then, enter vehicle number and proceed to pay the amount. On the next screen, enter vehicle number and proceed to pay with bank account.

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system, operated by the National Highway Authority of India. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments automatically from the prepaid or savings account linked to it or directly toll owner.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already made FASTag compulsory for both commercial and private vehicles starting December 15, 2019 for all toll payments across the country and failing to comply with the new rule will invite a penalty double the amount of normal toll fee. The idea was taken to reduce the traffic jam on highways.
