GDC 2020 to Put Back Due to Coronavirus Concerns

Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the latest tech conference to be closed within the wake of worldwide concern encompassing the outbreak of coronavirus.

Big-name participant companies like Activision Blizzard, Amazon, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Facebook, Gearbox, Microsoft, Sony, Unity, and more would not send people to the show over concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,” GDC said in a written statement.

After losing multiple major participants over the past few days from GDC, the team announced today in San Francisco that they have officially decided to cancel the event happening this March, they hope that they would be able to reschedule an event for “later in the summer.”

“We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks,” GDC said.

An FAQ on the official website says that currently paid attendees will get an associate email regarding refunds and registration status. The GDC Event Team said, “paid registrants are going to be receiving a full refund inside 4-6 weeks.” It also says it plans to form several of the talks that would’ve been given at the event free on-line as a part of the GDC YouTube channel or within the Vault.
