Harvey Weinstein was convicted Monday of sexual assault and rape but cleared of the most serious predatory sexual assault charges facing up to 25 years in prison, a partial victory for the #MeToo movement that sparked a cascade of allegations against the ashamed Hollywood mogul.
The “Pulp Fiction” producer with a knack for creating Oscar-winning movies was taken into custody after a New York jury found him guilty of rape and a criminal copulation.
The jury of 7 men and 5 women found the producer guilty of criminal sexual acts in the first degree and rape in the third degree, a measure of vindication for the dozens of women who came out against the one-time omnipotent producer.
At least eighty women had accused him of sexual crime stretching back decades, including actresses Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek.
Several Hollywood personalities and actresses, including those who accused Weinstein of molestation and sexual assault, took to social media to welcome the judgement and share their reactions.
