26 Navy personnel tested positiveon Saturday for coronavirus at a naval base in Mumbai and were serving at the INS Angre. This is the first instance of a global outbreak of a deadly coronavirus or COVID-19 infection in the armed forces. They are seeking treatment at the city’s naval hospital. A major effort to monitor anyone who might have come into touch with the sailors is underway.

Most of these sailors are asymptomatic or without any symptoms of COVID-19, are now tested positive. It is said that these sailors got coronavirus infection from one primary case, who was in contact with an ex-serviceman was tested positive on April 7.

All the contaminated sailors stayed in the Bachelor’s residential block at INS Angre, a shore-based logistics and support station, only a few hundred meters away from the main Naval dockyard, home to a variety of frontline warships and submarines of the force..

“After the cases were detected, the entire block was immediately quarantined. The 26 sailors who were put in isolation after a positive check for COVID-19 at Mumbai belong to INS Angre, a shore establishment. To date, there has not been a single case of COVID-19 on board any Indian Navy ship, submarine or air station,” the Indian Navy said.

INS Angre is also known as the Naval Barracks and provides various facilities to all ships and units located in Mumbai. The shore-based INS Angre is like a mothership that manages and oversees the operation of a wide variety of different units and facilities.
